Emily Wilde Book Series

 Dear Readers,

Have you ever read a book that enchanted you so much you wished you could read their adventures ad infinitum?  This happened only once in my life with the trilogy of "Lord of the Rings" from Tolkien.

This time it happened with the Emily Wilde book series from Heather Fawcett.  The first book is entitled "Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries".  It's the story a young lady named Emily Wilde, a professor from Cambridge, who goes on a journey to a cold faraway village to study faeries.

I read this book in July 2023 and it had been a while since I was this happy about reading a novel. This book alone rekindled my interest in reading fantasy fiction. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

The premise is original, and the plot evolves in slow motion at first but it picks up a faster pace eventually and I could not put the book down until I was done reading. I was never bored and the twists and turns kept me wondering what would happen next. The main character is relatable; I was slightly annoyed at her mistakes but soon found her very human in her flaws and it made me cheer for her whenever she was able to overcome her problems.

Another professor joined her in her quest and I didn't like him very much at first.  A handsome and elegant man who goes by the name of Wendell Bambleby.  I found him insufferable and arrogant, but I eventually warmed up to him after seeing how witty and brave he could be.

The other minor characters were also likeable and I was very invested in knowing everyone's fate. I read this novel in one seating, and I never had the urge to skip pages or stop reading.  And this says a lot about how interesting this book is because I had my fair share of abandoning stories from sheer boredom.

I waited with much anticipation for the sequel which was released this month!  The second book's title is "Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands" was published in January 2024 and I devoured it in 6 hours, staying up into the night because I absolutely couldn't put the book down and wanted to know the ending!

I loved it even more than the first book because I could see Emily in her element at Cambridge university, and I could also read more about the other teachers unlike the first novel where the action was at the village and her school was only mentioned occasionally.

I also like her secondary characters a lot more in the sequel.  The first one being her 19 year-old niece Ariadne who is an enthusiastic research assistant.  She has such a bubbly and innocent personality!  But she is also very brave and resourceful.  I hope she will be part of the next sequel.

The second sidekick is another Professor, Dr. Rose, who is head of the Dryadology department.  At first, he appeared antipathic.  The old professor seems more like a foe than a friend.  It took a while for me to warm up to his character because he behaved like a bumbling fool on many occasions.

One thing about Heather Fawcett is that there is a good dose of humor in her novels and this series is no exception.  Despite the sometimes sad circumstances, there are many moments that made me smile.

But I must warn you: there are some descriptions of killing and loss of body parts but the gore is not too scary, even for someone like me who usually despises reading about violence or deaths.

Overall, reading these novels feels like embarking on a thrilling but cozy adventure.  The author seems to convey a light-hearted ambiance for this story, and it doesn't takes itself too seriously either so it makes for an enjoyable read.  If you like academia fantasy and fairy fantasy, this will be right your alley.

I recommend these books wholeheartedly and I can't wait to read the third installment of this series!  Did you read these books yet? Please let me know if you have!

I wish you all a great month in February!

The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady

 Dear Readers,

It's already December 2023 and I can't believe how quickly this year went by!  So many things have happened since my last post. I am sorry I didn't update my blog sooner.  However, I do want to share my happiness with others so they too can experience it for themselves.  Life is hard for all, such is our condition when we are born in this mortal realm, but there is sometimes beauty in life and it's up to us to find it.

I recently came across a book that made my heart soar: "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady: by Edith Holden.

It's a beautiful hardcover book with illustration of the English countryside.  It's a reminder of how life used to be slower and how we could easily find beauty in the simple gifts of nature at each season.

If you like plants, flowers and little animals, this book will transport you to a different era in the old English countryside where you can walk in the serene gardens made by Mother Earth.

I don't like the cold and I struggle to find comfort in the winter months but this book has given me another perspective of the dreaded upcoming months.  Book are food for the soul in that regards.  You feast with your eyes but you also walk away with food for thoughts and a greatful heart.

Have a wonderful day dear Readers. I wish you all a peaceful month of December.

Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes and Bakes

Dear Readers,

Do you ever buy books by its cover?  I sure do.  A lot.  And my most recent one is a craft book: Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes and Bakes.  There is even an official website for that book!

Not that I needed another coffee table book that I would never truly use, but the cover art was just too tempting to pass.  Plus I love anything wonderland-related theme, whether they are books, dolls, or teapots.

So I bought this one as soon as I saw it and I am glad because it's out of print from Amazon.com right now (but still available from other sellers).  The book was co-produced by Hannah Read-Baldry and Christine Leech and you can read more about them HERE.

They also have another book under their name: Everything Oz: The Wizard Book of Makes and Bakes.  That would also be an interesting book to get!  It's also available at Barnes and Nobles in case you live in the USA and want to get it.

Back to Alice book now.  It's a very beautiful book full of color pictures and craft ideas.  It's however in paperback only.  I would  have preferred a hardcover or spiral-bound book but that's just me.  Oh well, paperback will have to do.

The book presents many craft and food ideas somewhat related to the Wonderland imagined by Lewis Carroll.  I say "somewhat" because some crafts are rather loosely linked to the book and a few are quite far-fetched (a shoe bag???).  But if you are planning a Wonderland-theme party, this book can be useful.

Did I like it? I think the author did a good job at explaining each step and showing the finished product in beautiful pictures but there aren't that many cooking recipes and they are rather plain and not inventive or unusual.  The crafts are undeniably gorgeous but again, there is nothing spectacular.   However, the book is filled with awesome photos or drawings on each page.  Everything is in color.  Here below are some of those pages.

The main attraction of the book is the beautiful art it displays: 5 out of 5 stars!  The content only gets 3 out of 5 stars though.  But  it will be a good book for inspiration rather than a book for exact reference.  It also looks great as a coffee table book or on a Wonderland bookshelf!

I Am a Witch's Cat by Harriet Muncaster

Dear Readers,

I have been following the websites of some very talented miniaturists and artists since I started my blog.  Three of them have recently released a new book and it is very exciting because you get to see how the hard word and creativity of these artists are being recognized and displayed in print!

Today I would like to showcase on my blog one of these book: "I AM A WITCH'S CAT" by Harriet Muncaster, an incredibly talented young lady who has created a wonderful miniature world from scratch, made with paper, clay, beads and other simple objects she finds around her.

I think her art is simply genius and you can see on the picture teasers of her book how this tiny world comes to life!  Harriet has given me permission to show some of her pictures here on my blog :)

The two following photos are from her new book but you must go on her blog VICTORIA STITCH to see the rest and also to see how she has created the COVER!!!

How adorable is this?

I just love love love this scene!

And Harriet has also created a very unique and decidedly loveable doll named Celestine!  You can see some photos of Celestine in this post HERE.  I enjoy reading about Celestine's adventure on Harriet's blog VICTORIA STITCH because she is so small and finds herself in the most quirky and fun environments with tiny props, which are usually handmade by Harriet!

This is a book that is truly inspiring for miniature lovers, cat lovers and doll lovers.  I will never be as talented and patient to build a whole world made of handmade paper objects but I sure wished I could!  I'll just enjoy what Harriet has to offer instead and dream that my dollies could one day walk in such a great display :D

A Lovely Miniature World

Dear Readers.

My baby was very ill these past two days so I hardly slept.  She woke up often in the middle of night, unable to sleep because of her stuffy nose. And I was unable to rest, staying awake and worried , because of her fever.  This resulted in a major headache that prevented me to do anything constructive this weekend.  My husband actually cooked for us which is a good thing because he is a better cook than I am.

But there was one positive that happened: a marvelous book that I had ordered did arrive just in time for the weekend!  I knew it would be an awesome book even before I got it but I waited until I had it in my hands so I can write a proper review.

I found out about the book thanks to Jennifer from PlushPussyCat, who introduced me to a fantastic website: Mouses Houses by Maggie Rudy.  Maggie has created a miniature world with mice living in houses that she has created herself made with all kind of recycled material.

It is truly a magical world.  Her photography is incredibly beautiful!  I did not hesitate to buy her book THE HOUSE THAT MOUSE BUILT which I ordered from Amazon.com.

The picture above is from Amazon and I don't want to post any of my own because I feel none of my pictures would do any justice to this beautiful book!

If you want to get an idea of what kind of world she has created, I would recommend browsing her blog Mouses Houses because it reflects very closely the spirit and charm you will find within her book.

The story is simple but oh so lovely.  The rhymes are easy to read and a delight for children to hear.  And the biggest pleasure is to admire the miniature objects in each pictures.  You will be amazed at the author's creative genius!  She transformed so many common and otherwise uninteresting objects into miniature furniture and ornaments, making you wished you could live in such adorable little houses.

Her mice are lovable characters.  They show so much emotions in their features and movements!  I just couldn't get over how much emotions they could convey in one single picture.

The only negative thing I could say about this book is that it is too short.  I wanted to read more about her mice and more about their world!  I heard there will be a second book in the making so I will be impatiently waiting for it to be released!

In the mean time, I console myself by reading her blog because she does post pictures of her mice on it and she also talks about the process of creating the miniature props she uses!  I feel very inspired thanks to her!

Have a great week everybody!

Alice in Lalaloopsy Land

Alice in Lalaloopsy Land is probably my favorite Mini Lalaloopsy doll.  I love setting up photoshoots with her and my miniature.  And this is what happens after I read "Through the looking-glass" by Lewis Carroll...

The lion and the unicorn
Were fighting for the crown
The lion beat the unicorn
All around the town.

Some gave them white bread,
And some gave them brown;
Some gave them plum cake
And drummed them out of town.

'Feather! Feather!' the Sheep cried again, taking more needles.
'You'll be catching a crab directly.'

There is no reason or excuse for this.  Just having fun :P

Have a pleasant weekend!

Cobble Street Cousins Book Series

I first learned about author Cynthia Rylant's while browsing Julia's Bookshop, which is a great place to explore the world of children's literature.   It then stumbled  upon the Cobble Street Cousins Book Series which I found enchanting!  I decided to buy them all, for myself and for my daughter to read in the future.

The series consists of 6 books about three 9 year-old girls (Lily, Rosie and Tess) who live in the attic of their aunt Lucy's house.  Their parents are ballet dancers and are busy touring the world so they decided to stay together in one house instead of going to boarding school or living in hotel rooms.  Each has her own personality and dreams.  Lily wants to be a poet.  Tess wants to be a Broadway start and Rosie wants a little cottage with flowers by the door.  Together they live many happy adventures with their aunt and neighbors.

The books are written by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Wendy Anderson Halperin.   Ms. Rylant is a prolific author of juvenile literature, recipient of many awards, and I look forward to read her other books!  The drawings by Ms. Halperin complement beautifully the books!  I wished the illustrations were bigger and she could release coloring books in the future!  The cover pages are in color but the illustrations inside the books are in black and white.  There are drawings on every page and very often, it would fill a whole page.

This book series aims for a target audience starting at 7 years-old.  The prints are big and the chapters short, which make this series a great introduction to Chapter Books for 1st and 2nd graders.

Here is the list of the books in chronological order:
  1. In Aunt Lucy's Kitchen
  2. A Little Shopping
  3. Special Gifts
  4. Some Good News
  5. Summer Party
  6. Wedding Flowers

What I love about the series is how friendship and love are portrayed via sweet and attaching characters.  There is no bad surprise here.  It's a light-hearted, happy and optimistic story from beginning to end.  Sometimes, it's good to read a Feel-Good book instead of a tense drama or riveting thriller.  Especially for children who should be happy souls and not worry-warts after reading dark materials.  Let children be children.  Let them enjoy the magic of childhood and imagination that books can offer :)
